Refractive Surgery (Laser Vision Correction)
The office of Melvyn D. Bert, MD, FACS has been on the cutting edge of Laser Vision Correction since its approval by the FDA in 1995-96.  It is estimated that over 600,000 laser vision correction procedures will be performed in the U.S. by the year 2000.  An alternative to contact lenses or glasses, and often a viable solution laser treatment has become the key to surgical success in the following areas of ophthalmology:
  • Myopia:  An error of visual focusing that causes difficulty seeing distant objects. With this disorder, near objects are seen clearly, while objects in the distance are blurred. This is the result of the visual image being focused in front of the retina rather than directly on it. It may be caused from the eyeball being too long from front to back, or from the lens power being too strong. Also referred to as "Nearsightedness."
  • Astigmatism:  A condition in which the cornea of the eye is asymmetrically curved, causing distorted vision.  The cause of astigmatism is unknown. It is usually present from birth, may
occur along with nearsightedness or farsightedness, and tends to remain fairly constant.

  • Hyperopia:  An error of visual focusing that causes difficulty in seeing near objects.  Farsightedness is the result of the visual image being focused behind the retina rather than directly on it. It may be caused from the eyeball being too short from
front to back or the lens being too weak. Also referred to as "Farsightedness."
Vision Testing Services
When most people think of a vision test, they think of reading letters on an eye chart.  However, this is only a small part of what we do.  Not only do we test your vision, but your eyes are examined externally and internally.  Using state-of-the-art practices and procedures we examine for cataracts and glaucoma as well as many other conditions affecting your eyes.
Imagine what life would be like without healthy eyes...you couldn't drive, read, watch television.  You might not even be able to read this computer screen.  Your eyesight is important to everything you do; we want to keep your vision sharp and your eyes healthy.  That's why we encourage all of our patients to have their eyes examined thoroughly once a year.

In Bert's Eye View Optical Division you'll find:

  • A complete selection of high-quality fashion eyewear
  • Professional staff members trained to assist you in selecting frames that look good, fit properly, and are compatible with your lens prescription

Contact Lenses
Millions of people choose contact lenses as an alternative to eyeglasses.   We provide complete professional care from the initial evaluation to follow-up visits.  Many vision conditions including nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can be corrected with contact lenses.  Dr. Bert can determine if you are a suitable candidate for contacts and recommend the proper lenses for you.
